Supporting Survivors at the Intersection of Mental Health and Gender-Based Violence: Approaches for Practice
Across gender-based violence (GBV) and allied sectors, service providers are responding to increasingly complex mental health needs as part of their day-to-day practice in addressing GBV. Many service providers are supporting individuals as they navigate experiences shaped by trauma, crisis, stigma and co-occurring risks, often while working within systemic limitations that constrain the resources, training, and service structures.
At the same time, differences in mandates, capacities, and approaches across sectors can contribute to gaps or inconsistencies in response. Strengthening collaboration, shared understanding, and coordinated approaches creates opportunities for more informed, compassionate, and survivor-centered responses.
In this Special Event, Eva Zachary, Executive Director of Muskoka Victim Services, will explore the realities, pressures, and possibilities at the intersection of mental health and gender-based violence. Drawing on her experience in crisis intervention, trauma services, and victim advocacy — as well as insights from her participation on provincial committees such as the Domestic Violence Death Review Committee (DVDRC) — Eva Zachary will discuss key patterns observed through practice, case reviews, and cross-sector collaboration.
Grounded in trauma- and violence-informed (TVI) principles, this session will highlight practical ways service providers can recognize and respond to mental health concerns; reduce stigma; and support survivor safety, autonomy, and dignity — even when working within systemic constraints.
The session will also explore promising approaches and strategies for direct service work, including supporting survivors in crisis, navigating co-occurring risks, strengthening communication across sectors, and integrating collaborative, coordinated practices that honour survivor choice and promote sectoral alignment.
